St Peters Church (Tiverton)

United Kingdom / England / Tiverton
 church, Grade I Listed (UK)

St. Peters Church, a grade 1 listed building is a large, dignified 15th century structure. The ecclesiastical parish was so large that it was divided into four ‘portions’, whose names are still retained in local place names, Pitt, Tidcombe, Clare and Prior. The Greenway Chapel, an architectural gem, built on the south side of St. Peter’s Church, was a chantry chapel for John Greenway, a local wool merchant, and his wife Joan. It is lavishly carved with all manner of decoration, including ships, wool-packs, staple-marks, coats- of-arms, and figures of men, children and horses. On the corbel line of the chapel are represented events in the life of Christ, beginning with the flight into Egypt and ending with the Ascension. A second chantry chapel, in memory of the famous Courtenay family, the Earls of Devon, once stood in the churchyard. It housed, amongst others, the gilded effigial monument of Princess Katherine, daughter of King Edward IV and wife of Sir William Courtenay, who died in 1527; but, unfortunately, the, already dilapidated building, was all but demolished during the Civil War.
