ORIGINI STORICHE DI TAUREANA

Le ricerche archeologiche hanno svelato la presenza storica di una civiltà sconosciuta e misteriosa, il “populus dei Taureani”, identificabili, in una più ampia collocazione storico-geografica, con il popolo italico dei Brettioi, che occuparono l’attuale Calabria. La presenza dei Taureani è attestata intorno la metà del IV sec. a. C., in particolare, nei territori compresi tra Rhegion, (Reggio) e quelli sotto giurisdizione di Lokroi (Locri), che si era creata uno sbocco sul Tirreno con la fondazione di Medma (Rosarno). Il confine tra i due territori, era il fiume Metauros (Petrace) . Secondo Catone e Livio il toponimo Taurianum (città dei Taureani) deriva proprio dall’etnico attestato anche in lingua osca sui bolli laterizi ritrovati a Tauriana. Livio afferma che Taureana fu alleata di Roma durante la guerra punica, successivamente il suo territorio diventò ager pubblicus e Taureana fu sede di Prefectura, e una importante stazione Romana sulla via Popilia, in quanto riportata nella Tabula Peutingeriana (carta topografica di epoca romana). Essa continuò a progredire anche dopo la decadenza romana.

  • Historical origins of TAUREANA Archaeological research has revealed the historical presence of a strange and mysterious civilizations, the "populus of Taureana", identified in a broader historical and geographical location, with the Italian people of Brettioi who occupied the current Calabria . The presence of Taureana has been around the mid-fourth century. a. C., in particular in the territories between Rhegion, (Reggio) and those under the jurisdiction of Lokroi (Locri), which had created an outlet in the Tyrrhenian Sea with the founding of Opus (Rosarno). The border between the two territories, was the river Metauros (Petrace). According to Cato and Livio Taurianum the place name (city of Taureana) derives from ethnic attested in Oscan on brick stamps found at Taurian. Livio says Taureana was an ally of Rome during the Punic war, after the territory became ager pubblicus Taureana and was the seat of Prefecture, and an important Roman station on the way Popilia, as shown in the tabulation Peutingeriana (topographic map of the Roman period). She continued to progress even after the Roman decadence.
