It was built in the style of the great French houses in 1875 by John Corbett, the Droitwich "Salt King", as a present to his wife, who was French/Irish.

Three thousand men worked on the construction of the building creating the mansion and park. They totally transformed the landscape creating 155 acres of parkland, building lakes, waterfalls and tropical gardens and planting over 3000 varieties of trees.

Ironically she never lived in the mansion.
