Built in 1913 and designed by Horace Trumbauer for railway magnate George D. Widener and his wife, Eleanor.
'Miramar' was designed by architect Horace Trurnbauer; Jacques Greber was the landscape architect. The French neoclassical-style mansion, situated on the Cliff Walk overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, was commissioned by Pennsylvania businessman George Dunton Widener, Sr. (1861-1912), who along with his son Harry Elkins Widener (1885-1912) perished in the sinking of the RMS Titanic. His widow, Eleanor (nee Elkins) (1861-1937), continued the project, and 'Miramar' was officially opened on August 20, 1915.
Mrs. Widener married Dr. Alexander Hamilton Rice, Jr. (1875-1956), Professor of Geographical Exploration at Harvard, on October 14, 1915, and the couple continued to use 'Miramar' as a summer home. After the death of his wife, Dr. Rice enjoyed the use of 'Miramar' until his death in 1956, at which time ownership reverted to Mrs. Rice's children, George Dunton Widener, Jr. (1889-1971), and Eleanor Widener Dixon (1891-1953), who sold the estate to a private school. In 1971, 'Miramar' was purchased by a real estate developer who maintained the mansion until its sale in 2006.
