Chaumont Semoutiers Air Base

France / Champagne-Ardenne / Villiers-le-Sec /
airport, military airbase, United States Air Force

The air base situated on the outskirts of the city of Chaumont is presently used by the French Airforce and the Gendarmerie, after a long American presence.

The French 61th Artillery Regiment (61e RA) was active there from 1910. It distinguished itself during the First World War and during the Battle of France in 1940. The troops were dubbed "Black Devils" (Diables noirs) owing to their bravery, the colour of their uniforms and the traces of gunpowder left on their faces.

From 1951 to 1967, Chaumont Semoutiers Air Base was operated by the United States Air Force under NATO supervision. After the USAFE withdrew from France in 1967, the French Army took over the air base, which was subsequently called Quartier General d'Aboville.
