HHS opened in the early 1970s. They are the Chargers. Note that Hallandale High School's model is the same as Coral Springs High School (in Coral Springs), Taravella High School (also in Coral Springs), and Western High School (in Davie).

Hallandale High School is the only school in Broward County that was closed for a period of 3 days during the swine flu outbreak that occurred in April-May 2009.
