The Jackknife bridge spanning the Kaministiquia River was built linking the city of Thunder Bay to The Mission Island, one of two islands that forms the Kaministiquia River delta. Construction of the bridge began in August 1910 and was completed in April 1913. In 2003, the bridge was closed because of the hazard of falling concrete. In 2004, demolition began on the road approaches of the bridge by MLA Northern Contracting following a winning bid of $950,160 including GST. In 2005-2006 there were plans of demolishing the bridge but after massive public outcry the plans were canceled as it turned out the bridge was the last of it kind in North America. In May 2007 renovation was started on the bridge and finished in July 2007.
