Orignally a side-arm of the IJssel, the Waa is now completely surrounded by the city of Hattem.

Folklore is still told that a village is to be found at the bottom of this water, complete with the church tower. The tale is from 'before Hattem existed', when 'only godless people' lived here. Allegedly, the people of that village never attended church and mocked the tolling of the the church bells on Sundays. One day during a storm a man put fire to the wooden church, and as a result the whole city sank into the earth. Water then filled that big hole of that which now is the 'cities pond'. Ederly like to comment to the youngsters that the tolling can still be heared--if you listen carefully enough.
