Stairway connecting two sections of Mead Street (Russell St to Bunker Hill segments). Actually, it's 7 flights of 10 stairs each, but "forty" is how it's always been referred to. The eastern side was shut down in 1973 due to neglect, and was reopened after an extensive rehab in the late 80's. There was an identical set connecting the two sections of North Mead St from Bunker Hill to Medford streets, but they were demolished some time during the 1970's.

  • I lived at the bottom of the fourties between 1944 and 1964. I believe it was called the fourties because it came in the address's of Mead st. The last house on Mead St was 43.
