In 1774, Astronomer Royal Nevil Maskelyne led a team to estimate the mass of the Earth and, indirectly, the value of the Gravitational constant, G, by measuring the deflection of a plumb from vertical by the mass of the mountain. To get the volume of the mountain, Charles Hutton made the first use of contour lines.
