"Englands Newest City" Preston is the most recent place in England to gain city status. It is also the centre of administration in Lancashire, although Lancaster is still considered to be the county town. It has a population of 130,000 and the urban area (including Leyland and Chorley) is well over 300,000.

Its name means 'Priest Town' and there are quite a few settlements in the UK which are called (or contain) Preston. For most of its life it was a small market town, however at the start of the Victorian Era it became heavily industrialised. It was the first English city to be lit by gas (the forerunner to electricity).

The phrase 'Every Preston Guild' - common in Lancashire comes from the fact that Preston was allowed to have a Preston Guild Celebration every 20 years, but there were long series of gaps of centuries where not one was held.
