Walter Reed Middle School is in LAUSD District 2. Its original name was North Hollywood Junior High School, but it was later renamed in honor of U.S. Army Major Walter Reed.
Many movies and television shows have been filmed there. For example, on the television show West Wing, the character Matt Santos announces his candidacy for president there.


At the 2008 Republican National Convention, the façade of the school was displayed on the screen behind GOP nominee John McCain as a backdrop to his acceptance speech. Although the campaign did not release an official statement, many have speculated that the campaign had intended to display a picture of Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the Army's leading medical institution and a facility widely associated with care for Iraq war veterans.
