Construction started in 1891 and completed in 1893. The bridge is 226 meters in length. It was the first bridge of this type to be built in Europe.
As a visitor you may hear a number of different stories as to how the bridge got it's name. I believe the wikipedia entry. One story that is definitely false is that is was repeatedly bombed by the Allies in WWII, but survived, though it turned blue. In fact it was not targeted by the Allies and the neighborhoods around the bridge are well preserved.
