  • It is imperative for a marriage procession that passes through Mudeti in north Gujarat to stop by at the statue of Surajmalji Chauhan and hear a 10-minute recital of poems extolling his bravery. This is how the town of Mudeti has been paying tribute to the bravery of one of its former rulers—for the past 125 years. Surajmalji, a 19th century Thakur of Mudeti, had risen in revolt when the British passed an order disallowing people from keeping weapons. At that time Mudeti was a tiny princely state of 24 villages. But regardless of the size of his turf, the Thakur questioned the British order, “How can Rajputs, whose duty is to fight, be asked to live without weapons?” When the British did not respond, he led an armed struggle which coincided with the revolt of 1857. The British were forced to withdraw the order after a decade when the small but fierce rebellion could not be quelled. During the decade-long struggle, Surajmalji defeated the British forces twice in the Aravalli ranges. His name became a household name and served to inspire the locals as well as the Rajput land lords, many of whom sacrificed their lives in the battle. The Thakur was also a philanthropist who was generous to the poor and had helped build a number of temples and wells. His popularity grew after the rebellion, and he was made a subject of many poems, which are now an important part of Rajasthani literature and are taught in several colleges. In Mudeti, he has turned from a ruler to its ruling deity. Bhagwatsinh, a descendant of the Thakur quotes a local poet as saying that his illustrious ancestor would have made “an ideal ruler of Delhi”. Along with paying regular tribute to Surajmalji, Mudeti still remembers two other martyrs from that old rebellion: a Balochi named Shahid Khan, and Ratnaji Rathod, who left his new bride just to be a part of Surajmalji’s ranks. Khan’s tomb can be found even today in the Mudeti fortress behind the temple of the Ashapura goddess, the family deity of the then ruling family. Surajmalji eventually died at a ripe age but he continues to live in the memory of the villagers to this day. Says Takhatsinh, the current Thakur of Mudeti says, “This is the ultimate proof of the fact that the deeds of the brave never go unsung and know no time barrier.” Revered as the ‘sun of Mudeti’, Surajmalji’s tale, it seems, will never set
  • near by mudeti, Idar is a city and a municipality in Sabarkantha district in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is located about 30 km north of Himatnagar and 25 km from Gujarat's border with Rajasthan. It is known for the manufacture of toys, tiles, its temples and various beautiful architectural monuments, including Idar Gadh, Roothi Rani Ka Mahal, Jain, Shiva, Vishnu Temples and the temple where Raja Harishchandra got married, called as Harishchandra Ki Chouri. There are numerous Bawadis similar to the ones shown in movies like Paheli, etc. The market of toys in Idar is known as Kharadi Bazaar. Idar is at the southern end of the Aravalli Range. Many temples of Lord Shiva are found in these mountains. In history, victory over the Idar state was considered as a difficult task. So, a famous folk song was mostly sung in traditional marriages Áme Êderio Gadh Ĵitya re aanand bhayo (We are very happy that we have captured Idar fort). It was formerly the seat of Idar, a princely state of British India. The name Idar comes from an ancient legend. As per the legend there were two devils named Elva and Durg, who stayed in the hills of Idar. So people used to talk about the place as I-dar-chhe (meaning: there is fear), the name Idar has came from there.
  • 38 km from Vijaynagar, this former princely state lies hugged by the Aravali mountain range, which gave it protection from various attacks in its history. In addition to some of the larger temples, look out for the signs of worship of smaller idols scattered up the hills. Take the climb up the hill itself, winding through the rocks, as a way to share the sacred space in the lives. Idar is also a good base from which to get to other sites such as Himatnagar, pilgrimage site Khedbrahma, Shamlaji and Dev ni Mori, the archaeological site of an unearthed Buddhist seminary, stupas, and viharas.
  • near by mudeti, By road: Vijaynagar, the nearest town is 120 km from Udaipur and 160 km from Ahmedabad, and is accessible by the National Highway 8. Public transport is available, but ask around beforehand, because it is not always reliable
  • GUJARAT IN THE NEWS ! According to the August 8 report of the National Council of Applied Economic Research, the richest city in India is now Surat , ahead of Bangalore and Madras , with an average annual household income of Rs 0.45 million (over $11,000 per year). 80 per cent of all diamonds sold anywhere in the world are polished in Surat 's 10,000 diamond units. The only non-Jews in the Tel Aviv and Jerusalem diamond bourse (stock exchange) are GUJARATI (Not Gujjus..) Between 2004-5 and 2007-8 Surat 's middle class doubled in size and its poor reduced by a third. The fifth richest city in India is now Ahmadabad , ahead of Bombay and Delhi , and miles ahead of Calcutta . The percentage of man-days lost in Gujarat due to labor unrest is 0.42 per cent, the lowest in India . Of Gujarat 's 18,048 villages, 17,940 have electricity. Under Chief Minister Modi, the face of industrial Gujarat is changing. The world's largest oil refinery is coming up in Jamnagar . Owned by Reliance, it already refines 660,000 barrels of oil a day and will double that this year. Thirty per cent of India 's cotton is grown in Gujarat, 40 per cent of India 's art-silk is manufactured in Surat , employing 0.7 million people. The world's third largest denim manufacturer is Ahmedabad's Arvind Mills. A KPMG report says 40 per cent of India 's pharmacy industry is based in Gujarat with companies like Torrent, Zydus Cadila, Alembic, Dishman and Sun Pharma. The state of Gujarat's GDP has been growing at 12 per cent a year for the last 12 years, as fast as China 's. India's wealthiest man, Mukesh Ambani of Reliance, is Gujarati. Forbes says he is the world's fifth richest man, worth $43 billion. Azim Premji of Wipro, is Gujarati. He is the world's 21st richest man, worth $17 billion. Ten of the 25 richest Indians are Gujarati. Some of the best business communities in India -- Parsis, Jains, Memons, Banias, Khojas and Bohras -- speak Gujarati. The two great leaders of the subcontinent, the Mahatma and the Quaid, were both Gujaratis from trading communities. One a Bania, the other a Khoja. Gujaratis number 55 million, five per cent of India's population living on six per cent of surface area, but hold 30 per cent of all Indian stock. Gujaratis account for 16 per cent of all Indian exports and 17 per cent of GDP. And I am a Gujarati too...:-) ...... PROUD TO BE A GUJARATI (Not a GUJJU ...... as was mentioned in this mail when I got it)...
