Established in 1959 by the Government of Vietnam, Hanoi University (HANU), located in Hanoi - Vietnam, has been the only language University under the Ministry of Education and Training entrusted by the State to supply interpreters, translators and teachers of graduate and post graduate qualifications in foreign languages to all economic sectors, universities and colleges. The University is large and offers a great number of modular programmes over a wide range of disciplines, at both bachelor and master levels. It is the only institution in the country to teach foreign languages to pre-departure students, post-graduate students and trainees. HANU can now teach 19 languages as foreign languages such as English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Hungarian, Rumanian, Bulgarian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Arabic and Vietnamese. Besides, the University also conducts researches in linguistics, teaching methodology, curriculum design and development, translator and interpreter training and provides language related services and training to the needy people, equipping the Vietnam human resources with the tool foreign languages as a bridge to the world and economic development of the country.
On the HANU campus at any semester there are approximately 6,000 full time students studying undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in different departments or divisions, among them about 1800 full time students taking English Major B.A Programme. Many of those students will become translators and interpreters, while other become teachers of English for colleges and universities.
