Population: 532089 inhabitants (World Gazetteer, census 1991). Ancient town and capital city of Kwara State, Nigeria.; founded as a refuge centre from intracenine wars of the old Oyo Kingdom. Resettled later by the Fulanis (who establish rulership based on the emirate system), the Hausas, Kanuris, Nupe, Gobirawas, Ethnic Malians, Baruba and ethnic Yorubas. Though hausa was widely spoken (ended most certainly after the demise of the old nothern nigerian region; kaduna served as centre) in addition to yoruba in the times before the current generation, it has given way almost entirely to Yoruba language. The indegenes of the city is bounded by one common faith, Islam. Population, about a million though contestable.
