The army base is home of the 45th Detached Reconnaissance Regiment (45-й гвардейский отдельный разведывательный ордена Александра Невского полк ВДВ). The Spetsnaz unit is part of the Russian Airborne Troops (VDV) and directly subordinated to VDV Headquarters. However it is also operationally subordinate to the GRU.
The unit is highly trained and combat proven. In August 2008, units of the regiment took part in the operations in the 2008 South Ossetia War. In April 2010, the battalion tactical group Regiment perform combat missions to ensure the safety of Russian citizens on the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic. In February 2014, the unit reportedly took part in the operations in Crimea. The reports are disputable as the Crimean self-defence units had no visible unit signs or badges.
