Edmonds School District surplused the 11-acre property in 2006, offering it to the highest bidder. Neighbors and othr lobbied the City of Edmonds to buy it and keep it open for public use, since it contained two full-sized playfields (one for youth league soccer, one for youth league baseball) plus a large open area popular with dog walkers from all around the city. After months of negotiating, the City chose to buy half (5.5 acres) allowing the other half to be sold to a land developer, who plans to build 27 deluxe homes where kids and dogs have played for 40-plus years. The debate over the sale has garnered press coverage, and the community formed the Southwest Edmonds Neighborhood Association in an attempt to have more influence in the way their part of Edmonds is developed.

  • Miss my old school - it was a forested landscape with filtered sunlight beaming through the trees. The smell of crayons, wood from new construction and school lunches on plastic trays. Frisbees, Alvin and the Chipmonks, Hula Hoops and Play-Doh...David Martin Woodway Elementary Class of 1962

  • I was one of the fortunate to attend the very first classes when the school opened in 1958. My teachers were; Miss Elsie Rupp, Mrs. Thorsen and one other whose name escape me right now. My grandfather, Edwin "Ned" Bostwick, was a janitor there also. I miss the play yard with the monkey bars and playing hop-scotch, the aroma of paper, paints, crayons that hung in the air in the classrooms, And wasn't there also a cafeteria? I remember one of my teachers opened an account for several of us at the Edmonds Bank, the purpose being to teach us the importance of saving money. Each week we were to add a few pennies to our individual accounts. Oh, those were the days..............things were so simple then and education mattered!
  • Cristy, I believe the school opened in 1955/1956 as Miss Rupp was my 3rd grade teacher there. Learned to sing "Silent Night" in German in her class. Bill Dake
