The town of Besnagar (Vaishya Nagar), 3 km from present-day Vidisha on the west side of the river, became an important trade center in the sixth and fifth centuries BCE, under the Sungas, Nagas, Satavahanas, and Guptas, and was mentioned in the Pali scriptures.

The Emperor Ashoka (whose wife used to live here), was the governor of Vaishnagar and it finds mention in Kalidasa's immortal Meghdoot. Besnagar was abandoned in the sixth century, it came into prominence again as Bhelsa or Bhilsa, during the medieval period. It thus, passed on to the Malwa Sultans, the Mughals and the Scindias.

Here is the Heliodorus pillar (Kham-Baba or Khamba Baba). Heliodorus was a Greek ambassador of the Indo-Greek king Antialcidas to the court of the Sunga king Bhagabhadra. (It is in an unknown place: nobody knows in Wikimapia where it is)

Vidisha is also famous for a renowned College of Engineering "Samrat Ashok Technological Institute" (SATI).
Even AB Vajpeyi won his first election from Vidisha seat.

  • Hello, Prof K C Nair, ex principal, SSL JAIN college, was a very hardworking and respectful personality. But his younger brother was a dog. And if he is alive he is a dog. This bastard molested many little girls, by luring them. He didn't spare even 5-6 six year old girls. If anyone knows, where he is now, just blow him hard, until his death.
