Founded in 1080, it hosts the mortal remains of Saint Mattew, one of the four Evangelists. It is considered one of the most attractive places of Salerno due to the presence of middle age artworks and because inside the main hall there is the tomb of pope Gregory VII, the Pope of Canossa.
The most striking external feature is the bell tower (mid-12th century), with small arcades and mullioned windows, standing 56 m high and in Arabic-Norman style which overlooks one of the few enterance porticos left in Italy.
