Great Elm

A very attractive place with some very desirable residences. Lower part of the village has a duck pond and remains of industrial complexes. There were water mills and an ironworks. The stretch of the brook towards Vallis Vale was called "Bedlam" because there was so much industrial activity. Now the area is once again solidly rural.

The name Great Elm was recorded as Telma in the Domesday Book of 1086, and then as Teames in 1236 which is a contraction of aet elm at the elm tree. Little elm developed into the village of Chantry.
At Tedbury Camp southwest of the village a pot of Roman coins was dug up in 1961.[2]
