The college was founded by Hazi Mohammad Mohsin on 1 August 1836. It completed its 175th Anniversary in the year 2011. He founded the college in Perron's House.The college retains an architectural structure as the Rishi Bankim Chandra Hall or The Main Building even today.This is one of the oldest heritage and prestigious institution of liberal arts and sciences college in West Bengal. It is affiliated with the University of Burdwan. From 1857 to 1960 it was affiliated to the University of Calcutta .
