According to the legend, Warmians built in the 5th century in Balga land built a Vundenava fortress for ruler Vaidevutis. The Prussian castle is mentioned in 1239, and was called Honeda by Germans. After a two year siege Teutonic knights destroyed the Prussian castle in 1239 after castle Prussian chief Kodrūnas treasoned. The Knights built a wooden, later brick wall castle. It was the residence of Notangia komtur, and was an important base for the conquest of local Prussian tribes. Since the 17th century, the castle lost its military function. Finds from the castle site can be found in the Kaliningrad history museum.
