Named for Dr. Knowles Kerry, (retired Principal Research Scientist at the Australian Antarctic Division), one of the dominant figures for the present Australian Antarctic biology program and the "father" of the Marine Biology Program, one of the main proponents of the "ecosystem approach" to management of the Antarctic region that is now included in the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), initial chairman of the Working Group on the CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring program (CEMP), leader and Chief Scientist of the BIOMASS (FIBEX) program, leader and chief scientist on numerous ANARE voyages, co-author and editor on several Antarctic books and films and recipient of the Antarctic Polar Medal (1993).
