train station, railway platform
Tapa railway station is located in the town of the same name, in Lääne-Viru County. Since 1870, the Tallinn–Narva broad-gauge railway has passed through Tapa; the first stop for passenger trains to Tallinn was Lehtse, and for trains to Narva – Kadrina (for international passenger trains – Jõhvi). Since 1876, the 112.5 km Tapa–Tartu railway has branched off from Tapa towards Tartu, turning the previously modest Tapa station into an important transport hub. The first stop for passenger trains on this route is Tamsalu; At the eastern end of the long track of Tapa station is a passenger station with two full-size platforms between the tracks, between which is a historic stone station building with a water tower. Trains depart from one platform in the direction of Narva and Tallinn, and from the other in the direction of Tartu and Tallinn. All Elron passenger trains passing through in the eastern direction stop in Tapa, as do trains on the Tallinn-Saint Petersburg-Moscow route, which is operated by the Russian Railways subsidiary FPC together with GoRail. Today, Tapa station with more than 100 switches and traffic lights has become one of the longest and most important intermediate stations of AS Eesti Raudtee, stretching 4.2 km from west to east, where it is also possible to load and unload goods on and off trains. In total, there are 12 railway lines on the receiving and dispatching section of the station, next to which there is a separate marshalling yard. Several lines also branch off from the station area to various industrial enterprises, such as the technical base of Leonhard Weiss OÜ, the logistics park of Estonia Locistics OÜ, the grain warehouse of Moe Distillery, the territory of the Tapa rural municipality government, and the wagon and locomotive depot of AS Operail.
