Equator Monument (San Antonio)

Ecuador / Pichincha / Quito / San Antonio
 monument, geodetic point, tourist attraction

Middle of the World City
The "Mitad del Mundo" ("Half of the Earth") equator monument just north of Quito, Ecuador.
Based on data obtained by Tufiño, it was believed that the equator passed through those two sites. However, according to readings based on the World Geodetic System WGS84, used in modern GPS systems and GIS products, the equator actually lies about 240 meters north of the marked line.

Impressive measurements for the time it was done. It is well known that this monument is a couple of hundred meters off. There is a smaller monument at the modern line. Both charge to get in. Much like the place in the United States where four States come together. massive tourist trap at the big one run by the Navajo Indians. A smaller site, several hundred meters into the State of Colorado, is attended by members of the local non-Navajo tribe. By the time the error was known too much land had been brought and sold for it to be practical to correct things.
