archaeological site, Roman Empire, ancient ruins

An ancient town in Paphlagonia, tentatively identified with the ancient settlement indicated by the habitation mounds of Batı (West) and Doğu (East) Salman Höyük east of Ilgaz in the Çankırı province of Turkey. Both of the two main mounds have yielded Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Roman period remains. The village of Cendere (earlier Candere and Çendire) just to the northeast seems to preserve the ancient name Kandara.
