Pura Tengger | temple

  • Kasodo procession is held here every year around March and April. It is told in folklore that a princess, descendant of the last King of Majapahit, with her husband fled to this place from the then-newly spreading Moslem Kingdoms. The couples and their follower set up a new settlement they called Tengger. The name came after their surnames put together (Roro Anteng and Joko Seger). Long time without a heir, on one occasion they ask the deity of the mount Bromo for an offspring. The lord grant the wish with one condition. The last child born must be sacrificed to the crater. Long gone since the event, 25 children have been born. Yet, the couple never fulfilled the promised. The lord gets angry and the mountain erupted, consuming the youngest son Prince Kesumo into the crater.
