On March 24, 2008, historic Molokai Ranch, then Molokai's largest employer, decided to shut down all ranch and resort operations, including its hotels, movie theater, restaurants, and golf course. In September 2017 the company that owns Molokai Ranch, Guoco Leisure Ltd, put the vast property on the market for $260 million. As of 2024, the ranch remains shut down, and is still owned by the same investment company. Operations are restricted to smaller-scale cattle husbandry.

The property includes lands owned by Kaluakoi Real Estate LLC, also known as the Kaluakoi Resort, and Molokai Properties Ltd. Both these companies are connected as subsidiaries to Guoco.
