The residence was once known as the Thurston Estate, built by newspaper publisher Lorrin Thurston, who sold it to Microsoft founder Paul Allen, who purchased the compound through a company called Big Surf Trust in 1997 for $11 million.

In 2021, the 22-acre compound, which boasts more than 12,000 square feet of living space, traded in an off-market deal for $43 million from Microsoft founder Paul Allen's estate, to OpenAI's Sam Altman.
