The name is derived from Werwolf, which is German for werewolf, but by order of Adolph Hitler was spelled like in Wehr, which is German for defense.

  • In order to ensure that the "Führer" could more closely follow the Wehrmacht offensice in the summer of 1942 toward Stalingrad and the Caucasus, on July 16th 1942, the HQ was moved from East Prussia (Wolfschanze) to facility "Eichenhain" then renamed FHQ "Werwolf", in the Russian Ukraine. It stood in a wood abought eight Kilometres north of Vinnitsa. There were two Bunkers and several wooden buildings and....a swimming pool...although never used for its purpose. There were also an extensive underground sentry post network for the "Führer Begleit-Battalion" throughout the wood. On November 1st 1942 Hitler moved back to Wolfschanze...maybe because of the fact that Stalingrad turned into a bloody flop for the germans. Then he returned to "Werwolf" once more for about four weeks in Feb / March 1943 during the german counter offensive of Fieldmarshall von Manstein which helped to stabilize the frontier... for a while....
