Number 5 Merrion Square was once home to William Stokes 1804-1878, a self-taught man, who left his school the day he joined it after his master had thrown a slate at his head. He later said that he studied his Latin Grammar "lying in the fields with my head pillowed on the neck of a cow." From these inauspicious beginnings he went on to become an eminent physician and Regius Professor of Physic in Dublin University, with one of the largest practices ever enjoyed in Ireland.
