Since the founding of St. Petersburg, the Germans have been the largest diaspora in it, but unlike Moscow, they lived here together with the Russians and the Dutch, without being divided into estates.
Here they lived in wooden houses. Troitskaya, later German, was the main street of the settlement. Later, Peter the Great banned the construction of wooden houses. The Germans moved beyond the Moika, where a Lutheran church and a German school arose.
Until the end of the 19th century, the German estate in St. Petersburg was the first in terms of numbers.
Under Catherine II, German colonies began to appear in the vicinity of the capital - Smolnaya, Novosaratovskaya, Strelna colonies.
