The Manchester Bury Oldham and Rochdale steam tramway company opened this depot in 1885 to serve the districts of Summit, Rochdale and Littleborough - by a 3ft 6in gauge tramway. A further line to the standard gauge of 4ft 8 1/2in headed south to Oldham and Hathershaw.
Traction was supplied by steam tram locomotives hauling double deck covered roof cars (though with open top deck sides).
