Alcantara is a 5th class municipality in the province of Cebu, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 11,532 people in 2,247 households.
Alcantara used to be called "Kogtong" from a big fish which was said to inhabit a spring in the heart of the town. When the Spaniards came, they renamed the place Alcantara after a town in Spain.
Alcantara became a town in 1830 as it separated from neighboring towns of Ronda and Moalboal. During the Spanish regime, the following ruled the town: Kapitan Paoy, Kapitan Arok, Kapitan Domingo Yosores, Kapitan Policarpo Tabanao, Kapitan Joaquin Nacion, Kapitan Juan Sabello, Kapitan Eugenio Tejamo, Kapitan Roman Yosores, Kapitan Marcelo Landiza, Kapitan Felipe Llenos.
During the last days of the Spanish regime, Alcantara was made a barrio of the town of Dumanjug with Felipe Llenos as "Kapitan". When the Philippines became a Republic under Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, LLenos was appointed as town chief.
In 1912, Alcantara was returned to its town status. This was before it was made a barrio of Moalboal by the Americans. LLenos served as Municipal President until 1922. He was later replaced on the following:
