17th century construction, harbour
This harbour was the result of Sir Hugh Cholmleys licence to construct a harbour for the Saltwick Bay alum quarries in 1673. Alum was principally used in the textile industry as a fixing agent for clothing dyes. It was also used by tanners to produce supple leather. Alum was quarried here from 1649 until 1791 and originally the alum was sent (before the construction of the Saltwick Bay Alum House), via boat, to South Shields for processing.
