The Krisjanis Barons Museum, dedicated to the life of the father of Latvian folk songs Krisjanis Barons (1835-1923), was opened in 1983 and is housed in the apartment which Barons occupied during the last four years of his life. It contains a memorial room containing the Dainu skapis (the Cabinet of Latvian Folk Songs) and an exhibition about the Barons family. The repository of records and video tapes offers an abundant selection of folk music, and information on the ancient history of the Balts.
Building is also a home of the Music section of the National Library of Latvia.
