Namhae Chungryeolsa

Namhae Chungryeolsa is an ancestral shrine for Chungmugong (Admiral) Yi Sun-sin (1545-1598). Originally only a small ancestral shrine built 34 years after Chungmugong‘s death in 1632 by local scholars who wanted to commemorate the naval battle at Noryang as well as Chungmugong

In 1659, Tongiesa Jleong lk rebuilt the shrine and in I662, the king gave it the present name Chungnyeolsa.

The text on the stone monument to the side of the shrine was written by master Uam, Song Si-yeol, and describes the history of Chungnyeolsa in detail. Previously at Hochungam near Chungnyeulsa, a warrior monk and ten other monks, in turns, guarded and held ritual ceremonies in spring and autumn.

Chungnyeolsa is considered the shrine of the spirit guarding the sea south of Korea. Presently at the shrine there is the tablet hall, front gate to the shrine, Inner three-door gate to the ceremonial hall, outer three-door gate to the lecture hall, and the provisional grave of the Admiral.
