Vicuña is a city in northern Chile founded during the government of Bernardo O'Higgins, to secure sovereignty over the Elqui Valley. The famous Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral was born there in 1889.

Vicuña is a major center for pisco production. CAPEL is the main pisco destillery in the zone.

It is also the home of the Mamalluca Observatory.
