East Nine Royal Tombs Hyeolleung (Guri)

Korea (South) / Kyonggi / Kuri / Guri

Hyeolleung consists of two burial mounds, one for King Munjong, the 5th monarch (1414-1452, r, 1450--1452), and the other for his consort, Queen Hyeondeok (1418-1441) from the Gwon family.

They lie on different hills of the same mountain ridge, Munjong was the eldest son of King Sejong and one of the scholars who invented the Korean script, Hunminjeongeum, with Sejong.

During three years of his reign, he published Goryeo history books, Goryeosa and Goryeosajeolyo, and also reformed the military system.

Queen Hyeondeok was a daughter of Gwon Jeon. Because she passed away right after she gave birth to Danjong and also before she became queen, she was buried in Ansan, Gyeollggi-do. Her tomb was later promoted to Soreung when Munjong ascended the throne. But Soreung was moved during the reign of King Sejo and finally moved again to the present location during the reign of King Jungjong in 1513.

The mound on the west side is the king's and the one on the east side is the queen's.
