East Nine Royal Tombs Geonwolleung (Guri)

Geonwolleung is the tomb of King Taejo (1335-1408) the founder of the Joseon Dynasty. Taejo ascended the throne at the palace of Suchanggung in Gaegyeong (now Gaeseong) on July 17, 1392 and founded a new dynasty.

During his seven-year reign, he moved the capital to Hanyang (now Seoul), and renamed Joseon as the name of the new dynasty.

This single burial mound is enclosed by retaining stone. Here are a stone monument, a octagonal stone lantern, and a stone incinerator, which is different from Goryeo era tombs. The mound is covered with pampas grass instead of sod. It is said that the earth and pampas grass on the mound were brought from Hamheung, Taejo's hometown,
