The ruined and overgrown remains of the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria di Cinquemiglia are located above the left bank of the Sangro, between Roccacinquemiglia (itself originating as a fortification protecting the abbey) and Castel di Sangro. The badly ruined and overgrown church is described as occupying a portion of an older temple dedicated to Hercules, itself within an ancient acropolis, according to a study by Gavini in 1927-1928. Today the exact location of the church building is elusive, and the area specified on the map is an approximation, covering the most obvious and likely location for an acropolis (the overgrown rocky summits) in the specified area.
