  • Keystone was settled by immigrants from northern Germany. The only church in the community is a Lutheran Church consistent with the immigrants that inhabited the area from the 1870's onward. It has a unique organization called the Keystone Turnverein which was a turning or gymnastics club begun in the early 1900's. It has evolved into a social club with bowling alley, dance hall, and bar with a membership requirement. Childrens Day is a significant event each year on the first weekend of June and is sponsored by the "Turners." It is "bird shooting" from a contest where young male children shoot at a wooden bird replica at the top of a pole with a cross bow shooting a lead slug. Young women participate in hitting a crock while blindfolded in the dance facilities. Children enjoy a parade in which they participate with a chosen king and queen , a late afternoon lunch and a childrens dance.
  • Keystone is a very conservative rural Iowa town. Few business operate and residents need to travel to do anything. People tend to be narrow minded and conservative.
