The original buildings of Fort Miley--the usual mix of officer's quarters, barracks, mess halls, &c. common to military installations--were torn down in 1934 after the Veterans Administration purchased 29 acres of Fort Miley for a new veterans hospital. Only the pre-WWII batteries, albeit decommissioned since the advent of air warfare rendered them obsolete, remained. During WWII, anti-aircraft guns were installed as part of San Francisco's coastal defense system.
