Originally constructed for the launching of Titan III missiles, this site was expanded at the cost of some $3 billion in the early 1980's to launch the Space Shuttle into polar orbits.
After the Challenger disaster, the Shuttle Solid Rocket Boosters were redesigned, adding enough weight to make launch into polar orbit impractical.
It is now used to launch the Delta IV class missiles

  • Interesting trivia about Slick Six. The day Challenger blew two sets of SRBs and fuel tnks were at the base. Atlantis was also there for "fit tests" along with a big spy sat or two. NASA ordered Atlantis taken to Edwards ten minutes after the explosion in Florida.
