Highlights in Collins Elementary School history

October 1907: Collins School opens in remodeled, one-room logging cook shack with one teacher and more than 40 students spanning seven grades.

Christmastime 1907: Students receive an orange, nuts and candy during Christmas program.

1908: First one-room schoolhouse on current Collins site is built, with second classroom added in 1910 and third in 1919.

1915: Miss L.V. Freeman, primary teacher, starts hot lunch program. She also starts first school exhibit ever shown at Western Washington State Fair in Puyallup.

1919: Gym built at school.

1921: Collins PTA forms.

1952: Tots Club forms to benefit kindergarten through second grades, and sponsors dances, socials for parents and other activities.

June 1958: Last eighth-grade class graduates before Collins becomes kindergarten-through-sixth-grade school.

June 1985: Last sixth-grade class graduates before Collins becomes kindergarten-through-fifth-grade school.

June 2, 2007: Pierce County to proclaim June 2 as Collins Elementary School Day.
