In August 1943, the Nazis forced more than 300 prisoners of the Syrets camp to destroy the remains of those shot in Babyn Yar. Shackled men built stoves from fences and tombstones of cemeteries, piled bodies and firewood on them and set them on fire. On the night of September 29, 1943, some prisoners escaped, but only about two dozen of them escaped
