The ancient and partly ruined church of San Vitale is located to the southeast of the modern settlement of Carpineti. It marks the site of an ancient and Early Medieval settlement, and probably corresponds to the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) castle of Verabulum, conquered by the Lombard king Liutprand in 727.
