Packwood Lake

USA / Washington / Ashford /
 lake, wilderness

Large natural lake located on the border of the Goat Rocks Wilderness in the Gifford-Pinchot National Forest. Formerly surrounded by summer cabins and a lodge, the government didn't renew their lease on the land and demolished all signs of humans leaving only the historic ranger cabin from 1910 at the entrance to the lake. There is one large island (Enchanted Island according to the locals) covered in old growth trees but access is denied by the USFS. Continuing past the lake, one enters the Goat Rocks wilderness and eventually the PCT (7 miles). Excellent view of Johnson Peak from the north end and Mt Rainier from the south.
