George Gipp is a legend in Laurium. George Gipp was born at 432 Hecla Street in Laurium on February 18, 1895. He attended Calumet Public Schools. Gipp participated in track, football, baseball, and hockey. He went on to a four year 32 game football career at Notre Dame leading his team to a 27 win, 2 loss and 3 tie record. Gipp died of an infection in 1920. Leading to the famous statement “Win one for the Gipper.” Property for the George Gipp Memorial Park, located on the corner of Lake Linden Avenue and Tamarack Streets was donated to the Village of Laurium by John Niemela (proprietor of Niemela Market). The park was dedicated on August 3, 1935.
